Tour the Great Karoo and Route 62.

All over the world there are Special Routes one can travel.  This Route – Great Karoo and Route 62 is one that starts with the Cape to Cairo road through the Du Toit's and Hex river mountain passes to the Great Karoo.

This route winds through the Swartberg Mountain Range to Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Capital in the Western Cape. On return to Cape Town we travel on Route 62 with its magnificent mountain ranges and spectacular views passing vineyards, some with their own cellars and orchards where export fruit and dried fruit is being produced.  It is a diverse tour in the sense that it caters for different interests.  For interests in History - this area has to be visited. The history dates far back in our Country’s history and is seen in the architecture of the buildings, each town has a story to tell.  The nature lover there is fauna to be seen when enjoying a nature drive.  The flora is so different to the rest of our country. The Karoo does not have high rainfall, therefore it is an experience to see the different varieties and species of flora that grows there. The photographer will have a splendid time with all the views on this tour.  Every kilometer you travel you see even more spectacular scenery than before.  The tourist who wants to add this tour to its list of visited places will not be disappointed.  A Tour not to be missed.



Day 1
After breakfast we depart along the N1 through the wine district of Paarl over the 800meter Du Toit’s Kloof and Hex River Passes to Matjiesfontein with its Historic Lord Milner Hotel, for tee.  The route follows the N1 Highway through Karoo landscape to Beaufort West, birthplace of famous hart surgeon Christian Barnard. We will end our day with a Nature Drive in the Karoo National Park where we will discover some unusual fossils, and watch the sun set as it can only happen in the Karoo...  













 Day 2.
Today we will be visiting the spectacular Swartberg Mountains, we pass through Meirings Poort pass with its spectacular Folded Mountains.  The 60 meter high Great waterfall has a deep pool ideal for a quick swim. After lunch we return through the Meirings Poort pass to Prins Albert, a picturesque Karoo town. We will overnight in the Prins Albert Hotel.

















Day 3.
This morning after a scrumptious breakfast we will be driving over the Swartberg Pass completed in 1886 by master road builder Thomas Bain. We will lunch at the famous bush restaurant Kobus se Gat, and then visit the famous Cango Caves and have a close encounter with an Ostrich overnight in the the Ostrich Capital Oudtshoorn.






















Day 4.
We will return to Cape Town via Route 62 on route we will be stopping at Ronny’s “Sex shop” for light refreshment. Our route takes us through the Little Karoo, passing through small towns. We will stop in the other pass Thomas Bain was famous for, the Kochmans Kloof pass, with its hole in the wall, it is a passage to Ashton. Lunch will include a wine tasting before we head for Cape Town.
